Decarcerating Disability: Deinstitutionalization and Prison Abolition
Author: Liat Ben-Moshe
As discussions around prison abolition have become more mainstream, and arguably more debated, there is a population that is often left out of the conversation. In the 20th century the largest exodus of folks from the carceral facilities was from the closure of asylums, disability institutions, and psychiatric hospitals. Through lived experiences Liat Ben-Moshe highlights the intersections of racial desegregation, disability, and incarceration, marginalization of disability and anti-sanism analysis and advocacy.
This case studies shows that prison abolition can become reality.
